Rhyme and Reason, June 1971 (Front Cover)

Editor's note: I chose to transcribe these passages from the original booklets, instead of scanning them in, to save space and allow them to be downloaded more quickly. I hope no one minds that I only copied works written by children from our grade; it would have taken much longer to get this page online if I hadn't. I have faithfully tried to preserve the original formatting, text, and typos.

                   RHYME and REASON

"Children are creative persons; they use
language as the artist the world over and in
all ages has used his medium, not as an end in
itself but as a means for the expression of
     thought and feeling."

                                   Hugh Mearns

The boys and girls of Academy Elementary School have

many opportunities to express their ideas about countless

subjects throughout the school year. Some of these thoughts

were so well written that we would like to share them with

you.

The samples of creative writing included, represent all

age levels of children attending our school. We hope you

will enjoy this fourth edition of "Rhyme and Reason."

America

America means much to me

But I have yet to ever see,

A better place to learn the golden rule

Than school; I think it's cool!

                          Lisa Pierce
                          Primary C

My Teddy Bear

I have a little, wee Teddy Bear

So soft and cuddly with his bushy hair,

But one day he ripped, and then I cried

"My bear will never be the same," I sighed.

                           Renee Peltier
                           Primary C

Cats

If I had a cat

You know what I'd do?

I'd play with my cat

And share her with you.

I'd then feed my cat

And when finished at last

I would take my cat

And go to sleep fast.

              Lisa Hinz
              Primary C

My Easter Egg

Was there an egg with just my name?

For in the basket they looked the same,

I looked around me here and there

I could not find mine anywhere.

Then all at once I saw some blue

My very best friend saw it, too,

Now do you know what we did see?

A special blue egg for her and me!

                      Marion La Vigne
                      Primary C

What is Magic?

I'ts an enchanted apple tree,

    I'ts a beautiful winged horse,

A bubbling witches brew

    A fairy's magic wand

A prince turned into a frog

    Best of all a prince,

Handsome and tall!
                    Dorothy Foks
                    Primary C

On Rainy Days

These days are gloomy and pretty unfair,

These days are horrible,

    There's rain everywhere,

Flowers start popping and leaves start, too

But we sit inside with nothing to do!

                            Christine Swain
                            Primary C

Springtime

I love spring

I like to play

Out in the sun

Most every day

When the birds come back

And for songs we don't lack.

              Jill Kozak
              Primary C

My Spring

Buds are swelling on each tree

Other signs of spring we see,

Children coming out to play

Always know that spring is gay,

Spring is bright and spring is fun

Spring will make you like to run,

Spring is going on a picnic

    Spring is sometimes getting sick,

Spring is eating some ice cream

    Spring is watching live sunbeams.

                      Henry Yu
                      Primary C

Easter

My bunny and I standing here

     Nothing far, nothing near,

Bunny and I patiently wait

Hoping Easter will not be late.

                       Audrey Beaver
                       Primary C

The Clouds

The clouds look fluffy so high in the sky

Their shapes are like mountains, I wonder why?

                          Barbara Boyer
                          Primary C

I'ts Spring

Buds are swelling on each tree

Other signs of spring we see,

Children coming out to play,

   What a very happy day!

                   Suzanne Kauderer
                   Primary C

Spring

Spring is roller skating and swinging,

Spring is swimming and riding a bicycle,

Spring is being Irish and going to the

playground,

Spring is rain, snow and kite flying.

Spring is flowers growing in our back-

yards,

Spring is easter and grass growing.

Spring is love in a garden.

                           Angela Dillon
                           Primary C

Spring

Flowers are growing,

Spring is showing

I'ts new green dress.

Vines are climbing to the sky

And kites are flying high.

                    Eve Heller
                    Primary C

My Mother

My Mother is so sentimental,

Always very kind and gentle,

Always willing, always trying,

And she is very special.
               Dorothy Foks
               Primary C

Snow

The snow came floating from on high

Silently, slowly from the sky

All different sizes

All different shapes

Slowly came floating down from the sky.

                     Amy Klein
                     Primary C

Snow

Snow is white, it sparkles bright

Covering everything with white.

The little snowflakes playing'round,

Falling to the covered ground,

Sparking so brightly

Falling so lightly

On the new fallen snow.

                      Margaret Likoudis
                      Primary C

Snow

I like it when the snow falls,

Cause then we can make steeple walls,

I like it when I go out to play,

Especially on a snowy day.

                       Peggy Roesch
                       Primary C

The Clock

The clock says tick tock, tich tock

Almost in rhythm to the sound I rock.

It tells that time is passing by.

Hurry and work, for time does fly!

                  Melissa Anderson
                  Primary C
